Why It's On My Shelf
I return to this book whenever I need to understand how the best executives actually think. The McKinsey team interviewed over 60 top-performing CEOs and distilled their findings into six key mindsets covering direction setting, organizational alignment, team leadership, board engagement, stakeholder connection, and personal effectiveness. What resonates most is how the authors separate excellent CEOs from merely good ones through the boldness of their vision and their willingness to reallocate resources dramatically. The section on treating the soft stuff as the hard stuff changed how I approach culture conversations with leadership teams. If you want to influence at the top, you need to understand what keeps those leaders up at night, and this book maps that territory better than anything else I have read.
