Why It's On My Shelf
Netflix's approach to culture challenges nearly every assumption about how large organizations should operate. Hastings builds his philosophy on talent density first, arguing that one outstanding employee is worth more than ten adequate ones, and then systematically removes controls that would slow those people down. The keeper test, where managers ask whether they would fight to keep someone, is uncomfortably clarifying. I find the concept of leading with context instead of control particularly relevant to platform governance, where the goal is enabling smart decisions at the edge rather than centralizing approval. The chapters on radical candor and removing vacation policies sound extreme until you understand how they depend on hiring exceptionally well. You can maintain accountability without suffocating people in process, but it requires a foundation of trust and talent that most organizations have not built.
